This department is responsible for a wide range of public services and supporting infrastructure. Public Works maintains over 510 miles of city roadways with roadway reconstruction and asphalt patching, traffic signals, signs, street lighting, and storm water management, as well as snow removal, street sweeping, and tree trimming. Public Works is also responsible for coordinating projects and maintenance of County, State, and Federal roadways in and around Joliet, with other governmental agencies.

The Department of Public Works consists of the Engineering Division, the Electrical Division, the Sign Division, the Roadways Division, and Fleet Services. The general responsibilities of each Division as follows:

 

Engineering

• Designs/constructs roadway and drainage improvement projects for the Roadway
• Reconstruction Program & Deteriorated Road Resurfacing Program
• Designs/constructs roadway and drainage improvement projects for the Capital Improvement Program (C.I.P.)
• Designs/constructs streetlighting and traffic signal improvements
• Investigates drainage complaints and proposes solutions
• Investigates sidewalk complaints and administers the sidewalk program
• Reviews plans for new development including subdivisions and site plans
• Performs inspection on construction projects including both City and developer driven projects
• Reviews requests for roadway signs
• Reviews requests for streetlights
• Performs traffic studies
• Maintains and installs roadway pavement markings
• Provides project management & contract administration services for various City construction projects as well as large scale IDOT and developer driven projects
• Processes overweight and oversized truck permits

Electrical

• Performs maintenance on streetlights and traffic signals
• Secures electrical facilities after traffic accident knock downs
• Maintains electrical material inventory

Roadways

• Performs street sweeping
• Performs street maintenance including pothole repair and crack filling
• Plows/salts streets
• Removes debris from streets after storm damage and removes garbage from public R.O.W.
• Mows grass on certain public roadways
• Grades aggregate alleys and roadways
• Performs parkway tree trimming
• Assists the Police Department with traffic control during parades, Joliet Slammers games, and events at the Chicagoland Speedway and Route 66 Raceway

Fleet Services

• Performs maintenance of City owned vehicles and equipment
• Coordinate the specification and purchase of new vehicles and equipment

Parking Department

• Oversees City owned parking lots and parking decks including maintenance, security, fee collection, and ticketing/towing
• Maintains Van Buren Plaza

Signage

• Performs installation and maintenance of roadway signs
• Maintains sign material inventory
