When older roadways deteriorate, Public Works engineers design the new roadway to current performance and safety standards, and establish contracts with local contractors to rebuild the road. One of the most significant aspects of the design involves the proper management of storm water. Public Works engineers are also involved in the design and installation of traffic signals, street lights, and roadway signage.
Engineering is responsible for issuing permits for over-weight and over-sized trucks, dumpster placement, earth fill placement, and the installation of sidewalk, driveways, and private utilities (phone, electric, natural gas, etc.) within City rights-of-way.
Public Works engineers also review the infrastructure improvements for new residential and commercial development to ensure conformance with City ordinances.
