Larry E. Hug was elected to his first term on the Joliet City Council in April 2011. He currently serves on the Finance Committee and the Communications, Technology and Information Systems Committee. Larry is a 1981 graduate of Providence High School who worked his way through college, graduating from Northern Illinois University in 1987 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. A long-time private business owner in the Joliet area he is also a licensed Independent Insurance Agent, an IHSA member official for over 25 years and has been a member of Teamsters Local 179. His experience gives him a unique, comprehensive perspective into matters involving finance, business, employment and labor.

Larry has always been actively involved in important community and commerce issues, from the local to the national level. His involvement has ranged from the organization of relief efforts for people affected by disasters (Katrina, Joplin); to the creation of a national independent business owners network and trade group (Federation of United Retail Music Merchants), to support of local nonprofit organizations (UCP yearly telethon, Joliet’s First Night).

Family History
Larry grew up in Mokena, IL and has lived in Joliet since 1987. He has been married for 14 years to his wife Susan (nee Pohlman), a life-long Joliet resident. Together they have two children, Douglas and Lauren who both attend school in the Plainfield School District 202. Larry's basic motto in life is simple, "Family first, Family always."

Goals for the City
Larry is focused on guiding the City of Joliet through its current financial crisis to return it to sound economic footing while keeping it a safe community with quality services for all residents. Specifically, Larry would like to increase the presence of stable, responsible commercial and industrial businesses to help alleviate the tax burden on residents. Additionally, he would like to foster a closer partnership with the locally owned, home-grown Joliet businesses as they are the backbone of our business community. Larry is an active advocate for education and would like to increase the partnership between the City of Joliet and all school districts within its boundaries. Larry sincerely believes all elected officials must be easily accessible and responsive to their “bosses.” In that spirit he encourages all Joliet residents to contact him with their ideas, comments and input.
