Richardson/Stevens House — 19 South Eastern Avenue

The Benjamin Richardson/W.W. Stevens House is a 2-story, wood clapboard, Italianate/Greek Revival style structure built in 1841/1868 on a Joliet limestone foundation. The 2-story main body of the house is distinguished by an offset, single entry door with sidelights and transom. The structure is topped with an end gable roof with decorative attic window. The older, 1½-story south section has a side gable roof and a centrally-placed front door, flanked by two six-over-six, double-hung sash windows. The structure is a Local Landmark and is part of East Side National Register District.

The house is possibly the oldest home in the part of Joliet known as Campbell's Addition of 1838. The house was nominated for its architectural style and for historical significance. It is believed this house was a duplex that served as the residence for both Mr. Stevens and Mr. Richardson. Mr. Richardson was in law practice with W.W. Stevens. Upon Richardson's death in 1868, Stevens took control of the property and by 1872 was living in the home. The Richardson/W.W. Stevens home is now a single-family residence.
