Waste Management

Garbage, yard waste, and recycling pick-up will be at 6 am on the regularly scheduled day.  Please place your garbage, yard waste, and recycling next to the pavement before 6 am.  Pick-up will resume at the normal time once the project has been completed.

Water Main Replacement Program

The City is conducting an aggressive water main replacement program  in order to remove failing, leaky pipes with a goal of reducting the city’s water loss to less than 10% as required by the City’s Lake Michigan allocation permit.

Construction of the 2024 program begins April 1.  Please view the Location Exhibit showing the locations of water main replacement scheduled for 2024 construction (some location adjustments may be made as the design work progresses)

An initial project notification mailing was sent on March 1, 2024 to all addresses adjacent to the water main construction work.  The mailing consisted of 4 items:

Please contact the Resident Engineer for your project area if you have questions during construction.  Contact information for the Resident Engineers is provided on the above interactive map.

Water Main Construction continuation from 2023

Some water main project that began in 2023 will continue construction in 2024.

Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation Plan

sewerLining

The City of Joliet provides wastewater services to residential, commercial, industrial, private utilities, and private sanitary districts covering over 40 square miles across Will and Kendall Counties.  The wastewater collection system consists of fifty (50) sanitary sewer pumping stations, 608 miles of sanitary sewers with pipe diameters ranging from 3" to 72" and approximately 13,600 manholes.  The age of the system ranges from the late 1800s to the present day and is rapidly aging.  Failure to maintain the system can result in sanitary sewer overflows, basement back-ups, and unnecessary treatment of excess water at the wastewater treatment plants.

In 2014, the City initiated a comprehensive sanitary sewer inspection and rehabilitation program in known problem areas.  These inspections included flow monitoring, sewer televising, smoke testing, dyed water flooding, and manhole inspections.  Based on these investigations rehabilitation recommendations have been generated to decrease infiltration, increase capacity, restore structural integrity, reduce basement back-ups, reduce sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), and reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs). The rehabilitation for these priority areas started in 2017 with a goal of rehabilitating 1% of the system annually.  The proposed work will utilize cost-effective rehabilitation techniques such as lining, grouting, and/or replacement to ensure capacity, maintain condition, and minimize overflows due to structural or operational deficiencies.  Click the link below for a map of the completed and proposed rehabilitation projects.

Construction of the identified projects is dependent upon available funding.  It may be necessary for the City to modify the program based upon system needs.  For more information about the sanitary sewer main rehabilitation program, please contact the Department of Public Utilities Engineering Department at 815-724-4230.

Sanitary Sewer System 10-year Plan (2017-2026)

In 2013, the City implemented a sanitary sewer cleaning and CCTV inspection program of 40 miles of sanitary sewer per year.  It is the City's intent to continue these contracts and have the entire system televised by 2027.  Click the link below for a map of the completed cleaning and televising areas.

Road Resurfacing and Road Reconstruction

Road resurfacing and reconstruction projects are managed by the City's public works department.  These projects are also shown on the interactive map at the top of this page.  For more information call 815-724-4220.
