The Freedom of Information Act is a State Statute (5 ILCS 140/1-140/11) that provides for the public to gain access to government records. This Act is not intended to be used to violate individual privacy, nor for the purpose of furthering a commercial enterprise, or to disrupt the duly-undertake worn of any public body independent of the fulfillment of any of the aforementioned rights of the people to access to information.
The City of Joliet complies with the standards set by the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).
It is the policy of the City of Joliet to fill all requests for public documents in a timely fashion.
All requests for production of records must be in writing, preferably upon a City of Joliet Freedom of Information Request Form and must be submitted to the City Clerk. The City will accept any legible written request, provided that such written request is clearly stated and contains the name, address and telephone number of the requestor. Requests can be made in person or by letter, fax, email or online.
Requests may be submitted in person to the City Clerk’s Office during regular business hours Monday thru Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Requested information will be produced within five (5) business days (twenty-one (21) business days for commercial requests) as allowed by law. In rare cases, you will be notified, in writing, if an extension is needed. Some information may be denied; this notification will also be in writing along with information regarding the appeal process.
Fees for requests are as follows:
- First 50 pages of standard size black & white copies are provided at no charge.
- Additional pages beyond the first 50 - $0.15 per page
- Color copies - $0.15 per page
- Plat pages (anything larger than 11x17) - $1.00 per page
- Audio CD / Photo DVD - $1.00 per disc
- Accident Reports - $5.00 per report
