Sales Tax
Effective January 1, 2012, the home rule sales tax for businesses selling general merchandise will increase from 1.25% to 1.75%. The increase in sales tax was approved on September 20, 2011 by Ordinance 16780 [PDF]. This increase in sales tax is paid directly to the Illinois Department of Revenue, who forwards the payment to the City of Joliet.
Sales tax paid within the City of Joliet differs between the sales location taking place in Will or Kendall Counties.
Telecommunications Tax
In 1991, the City of Joliet implemented a five percent (5%) telecommunications tax for Joliet residents. The provider collects this tax and pays it directly to the City of Joliet on a monthly basis.
On September 20, 2011, the City of Joliet adopted Ordinance 16875 [PDF] which increases the telecommunications tax from 5% to 6% effective July 1, 2012.
